Jennifer Wilke, civil war novel in progress

Sophronia Rogers
Millwood, Ohio

Sophronia was Edwin's most devoted correspondent during the war. He came home and married her in January 1867. After he was elected to the Ohio state legislature, meeting in Columbus, he was separated from her on their ninth wedding anniversary and wrote to her:

My Darling Phrone
I know what a noble, kind hearted, and generous minded woman you are. I appreciate your many grand and noble qualities and I thank God, that you are mine and that I am yours... believe me truly, faithfully and forever yours only.
               E.L. Lybarger

Their only child died as an infant. Sophronia died of typhoid in 1882, at age 36. The largest monument in the oldest section of the Danville, Ohio cemetery is Edwin's monument to her and his grief.
